Hold onto your acorns

Everyone wants to talk about a unicorn, but not everybody looks at the acorn. I found an acorn yesterday in the woods when hiking with my son. It was in front of a giant Bur oak tree. We saw several other acorns scattered on the floor of the nature preserve we were hiking in.

My understanding is that the oak might give out a thousand acorns. Squirrels might bury some of them. They will forget some of them. And a few of them will sprout into saplings. And some of them, or maybe one of them, might actually become a giant oak tree.

What does that mean for our life? What it means is we don’t give up on our ideas. We don’t give up on our thoughts. If we want to do something, those thoughts, those ideas, those are our acorns.

We hold on to our acorns. We sow them where we can. Sometimes, perhaps we forget where they are. But in the long run, if we keep at it, some of those acorns, or at least one of those acorns, will become an oak tree.

And that, I think, is a powerful message that nature sends us. So, while everybody is out there talking about unicorns, my humble suggestion is to focus on your own acorns.
